With their 7-wicket win over Greece at the ongoing Europe T20 World Cup Sub Regional Qualifier C at Guernsey, Spain recorded their 14th consecutive victory in Men's T20Is, breaking the record of 13 set by Malaysia in 2022.
The Spaniards' most recent defeat in the format came against Italy some 20 months ago, and they have since recorded 15 wins in series against the Isle of Man, Jersey and Croatia as well as three wins on the bounce at the current T20 qualifier, a run only interrupted by a sole no result in the rain-interrupted second fixture against the Isle of Man last year. That series was also notable for the record-breaking 10-wicket win they notched in the fourth fixture, bowling the Manx out for just 10 and chasing in 2 legal deliveries.
Speaking to Cricbuzz, Spain head coach Corey Rutgers said, "A proud record to be notified about today, we obviously don't play for records but this does feel special for the group. It has been a transformative few years in Spain, and a lot of credit goes to players who sacrifice a lot of their time to play for Espana, the management and my coaching staff. Couldn't be prouder of all involved."
Despite their remarkable streak, Spain currently look unlikely to progress to the European Regional final next year, as a rain-enforced abandonment in their match against Denmark earlier in the week means that they will need Cyprus to stage an unlikely upset against the Danes tomorrow. Should Denmark win their final group match, they are assured of progressing to the final owing to their superior net run rate, consigning Spain to the bronze medal match against either Finland or just possibly Guernsey. "Unfortunately that's cricket, and we didn't win convincingly in our first three games. We will have to learn a hard lesson, and come back stronger in the future," said Rutgers.
By besting Greece yesterday, they moved closer to the record for most consecutive matches unbeaten, currently held by Nigeria, whose 16-match streak last year was similarly interrupted by a no result against Tanzania when rain ended the chase just three balls short of the required five overs. The record for consecutive victories in all T20Is is currently held by Thailand Women at 17.
