In a dismal display of batting, Bangladesh crumbled in both innings on a batting-friendly pitch in Chattogram, succumbing to an innings and 273 runs defeat against South Africa. This loss follows a 7-wicket defeat in the first Test at Mirpur, resulting in a series whitewash for the home side.
Throughout the day, Bangladesh lost a total of 16 wickets, first managing only 159 runs in response to South Africa's imposing total of 575. After being bowled out in the first innings, they faced the follow-on, returning to bat but falling short again, this time scoring just 143 runs.
Kagiso Rabada led the attack in both innings, securing five wickets in the first and then followed by Keshav Maharaj, who also took a five-wicket haul in the second innings. The batting order struggled significantly, with only Mahmudul Hasan Joy reaching double figures among the top four batsmen, while Sadaiman Islam was dismissed for just 6 runs and Zakir Hasan managed only 7.
Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto contributed 36 runs, but the experienced Mushfiqur Rahim fell for a mere 2 runs. Even debutant Mahidul Islam Ankon, who previously scored a duck, could only manage 29 runs in the second innings.
The day began poorly for Bangladesh, with them losing eight wickets for just 48 runs, before a resilient partnership between Taijul Islam and Mominul Haque salvaged some pride with a 103-run stand, allowing Bangladesh to reach 159 in their first innings. Mominul's 82 runs stood out as the only significant score.
In the follow-on, the batting collapse continued, and Bangladesh's struggle to build partnerships ultimately led to a disappointing end to their home series. With the defeat, the team must now reassess their strategies and approach as they look to bounce back in future fixtures.
