Shubman Gill and Maheesh Theekshana Reach Top Spot in ICC Latest ODI Rankings
India’s star batter Shubman Gill and Sri Lanka's talented spinner Maheesh Theekshana have both reached the top spot in the ICC’s latest ODI rankings. According to the newly published rankings by ICC on Wednesday, Gill is now at the top of the batter’s list, while Theekshana holds the number one position among bowlers.
Shubman Gill has overtaken Pakistan's Babar Azam, who sits at 773 points, with 796 rating points. Recently, Gill delivered an outstanding performance in India’s ODI series against England, scoring 87, 60, and 112 runs. With a total of 259 runs in the series, his average rose to 86.33, securing his spot at the top of the rankings. This marks Gill's second time at the top of the ODI rankings. He previously reached this position during the 2023 ODI World Cup.
Meanwhile, Sri Lankan spinner Maheesh Theekshana sits atop the bowlers' rankings with 680 rating points, edging out Afghanistan's Rashid Khan, who has 669 points. Theekshana delivered brilliant bowling figures of 4/40 and 0/11 in the recently concluded two-match ODI series against Australia. Despite Sri Lanka failing to qualify for the Champions Trophy, Theekshana's impressive performances have earned him the top spot.
In the bowlers' rankings, after Theekshana and Rashid Khan, Namibia’s Bernard Scholtz holds third place, India’s Kuldeep Yadav is fourth, and Pakistan’s Shaheen Shah Afridi is ranked fifth.
Ahead of the Champions Trophy, New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner has also achieved significant success. With five wickets in three matches during the Pakistan Tri-Nation series, Santner has moved up five spots to seventh in the rankings.
