Shikhar Dhawan Bids Farewell to International and Domestic Cricket
Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan has announced his retirement from international and domestic cricket. Over his international career, Dhawan played 34 Tests, 167 ODIs, and 68 T20 matches for India.
This morning, Dhawan made the announcement through a video message on social media. The left-handed batsman represented India for over 13 years, scoring 2,315 runs in Tests, 6,793 in ODIs, and 1,579 in T20s across 34 Tests, 167 ODIs, and 68 T20 matches respectively.
In his retirement video, Dhawan stated, "In a story and in life, it's important to turn the page to move forward. That’s why I am announcing my retirement from international and domestic cricket. I have comforted myself with the thought that instead of being sad about not playing for India anymore, I should be happy that I had the opportunity to play for my country."
At 38 years old, Dhawan last played for India in December 2022 during an ODI against Bangladesh in Chattogram. His final T20 match was in July 2021 in Sri Lanka. Dhawan hasn't played a Test for India since 2018.
His last competitive appearance was in April, playing for Punjab Kings in IPL 2024 against Sunrisers Hyderabad, after which he missed the rest of the season due to an injury.
Dhawan was India's highest run-scorer in both the 2013 and 2017 Champions Trophy tournaments and also topped the charts in the 2015 ODI World Cup.
Shikhar Dhawan first came into the limelight during the 2004 Under-19 World Cup held in Bangladesh, where he was the tournament's top scorer with 505 runs in seven matches, including three centuries and one fifty.
