Sherfane Rutherford's Maiden ODI Century Leads West Indies to Victory
In a thrilling encounter, Sherfane Rutherford's explosive 113 runs off 80 balls led West Indies to a remarkable 5-wicket win over Bangladesh in the first ODI of the series, giving the hosts an early 1-0 lead. Despite Bangladesh posting a challenging total of 294 runs, Rutherford's sensational century, along with captain Shai Hope's crucial 86, helped West Indies end their 11-match losing streak against Bangladesh in ODIs.
The match seemed to be slipping away from West Indies after they were 130/3 in 30 overs, still needing 165 runs from 120 balls. However, Rutherford, initially slow-paced, found his rhythm after reaching fifty and increased the scoring rate. He was instrumental in the chase, combining with Hope for a 99-run partnership that brought them closer to victory.
Bangladesh's bowlers did have some success early on. Tanzim Hasan Sakib got the breakthrough by dismissing Brandon King LBW, and Naheed Rana removed Aven Lewis for just 16 runs. West Indies were in a bit of trouble at 27/2, but the partnership between Hope and KC Carty stabilised the innings. Rishad Hossain broke the partnership, sending back Carty for 21 runs.
Hope continued his steady innings, reaching fifty off 60 balls, while Rutherford quickly followed suit with a fifty off 47 balls. Hope’s departure at 86, dismissed by Bangladesh captain Mehedi Hasan Miraz, slowed things momentarily, but Rutherford continued to dominate the bowlers.
Rutherford reached his century off 77 balls, blasting 7 fours and 8 sixes. He was eventually dismissed for 113 runs, but by then, he had almost taken his team over the line. Justin Greaves, who had been supporting Rutherford, played a key role in the final stages, scoring 41 runs off 31 balls.
West Indies chased down the target of 295 in 47.4 overs, winning by 5 wickets with 14 balls to spare. With this victory, they lead the three-match series 1-0, and Bangladesh will need to bounce back strongly in the next game.
