In the fourth day of the first Test match of the series at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium, Bangladesh lost to Sri Lanka by 328 runs. Failing to chase the massive target of 511 runs, the Tigers collapsed for 182 runs. In the first innings, Bangladesh was all out for 188 runs. Sri Lanka scored 280 and 418 runs in their respective innings. Shakib Al Hasan is returning to the team for the next Test. Captain Najmul Shanto expressed relief for the team.
After a major defeat against Sri Lanka, there's curiosity among journalists in the press conference about how much comfort the Bangladesh captain seeks for the next Test, especially with the return of Shakib Al Hasan.
"Obviously, having senior players in the team brings comfort. If a player like Shakib bhai (Shakib Al Hasan) returns, it's good for everyone. His experience will greatly benefit our team. If he returns, it will be good," said the captain.
The bilateral series against Sri Lanka marks the beginning of Bangladesh's international cricket activities in 2024. In the absence of Shakib, the team has started practicing in Dhaka. Shakib has already begun training with the Red Ball Club. The second Test will start at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong from March 30. Shakib's return could bring relief to the Bangladesh camp. Shakib last played a Test match in April last year against Ireland. His return to the field is eagerly awaited.
