Shakib Al Hasan announces his retirement from Test cricket

Bangladesh cricket’s biggest star, Shakib Al Hasan, has announced his retirement from Test and T20 cricket. However, this decision has not come from frustration or disappointment; rather, it has been made after discussions with relevant parties.

During a press conference in Kanpur, India, on Thursday, Shakib revealed his plans to retire from Test and T20 formats. At 37, he confirmed that he will not be leaving red-ball cricket just yet, stating that the upcoming series against South Africa at home in October will mark the end of his Test career.

Following the series against India, the Test series against South Africa will commence in Mirpur. Shakib expressed his desire to conclude his Test career on home soil. However, there have been complications regarding his return to the country. When asked whether he would play in the series despite these issues, Shakib said, "As of now, I am available. The current situation in the country isn’t entirely in my hands. There have been discussions with the BCB regarding my plans, especially concerning Test cricket. I felt that this home series would be my last. I spoke with Faruk bhai and the selectors about this. The Mirpur Test will be my last Test. The board is trying to ensure that I can play safely and that if necessary, traveling abroad won’t be a problem for me. They are mindful of these matters."

Shakib appeared visibly distressed during the press conference, raising questions about whether his decision to retire stemmed from pressure or disappointment. He clarified his stance, stating that his decision is about giving opportunities to the younger generation.

"No, it's not out of frustration or disappointment. I believe this is the right time to move on and give younger players a chance. I have the same thought regarding T20s. I’ve spoken with everyone in the board, and now seems the best time for me to transition out of T20 cricket. I play in franchise leagues for six months or a year, and this is an opportunity for new players to step up. If the board feels that I can contribute in T20s later on, we can discuss it. However, I don’t see myself in T20s anymore. Since the South Africa series is a Test series, I wish for it to be my last."

Shakib’s thoughtful approach reflects his commitment to the future of Bangladesh cricket, as he prepares to step aside for the next generation.
