On the same day, both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma announced their retirement from international T20 cricket. Smiling, the two modern cricket legends bid farewell to the shortest format (international) after leading India to their second T20 World Cup title.

Virat Kohli, the hero of the final against South Africa, announced his retirement while receiving his award. Rohit Sharma, who excelled throughout the tournament as both a batsman and a captain, announced his retirement during the post-match press conference.

In the press conference, Rohit Sharma, who led India to T20 World Cup victories both as a player (2007) and as a captain (2024), stated:

“This is also my last international T20 match. There couldn’t be a better time to bid farewell to this format. I have loved every moment of my career. I started my international career with this format for India. I always wanted this, I wanted to win the World Cup.”

“I wanted this at any cost. It’s hard to put into words, this is a very emotional moment for me. I was desperate for this World Cup. I am very happy to have finally achieved it.”

Rohit Sharma retired as the highest run-scorer in international T20 cricket. In 159 matches, Rohit scored 4,231 runs. He holds the record for the most centuries (5) in international T20s and has won two World Cup titles.
