Phil Simmons Signs Contract Extension with Bangladesh Cricket Board until 2027 World Cup
The journey of Phil Simmons with Bangladesh cricket is far from over. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has extended his contract, ensuring that Simmons will remain as the head coach of the Bangladesh national cricket team until the 2027 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup.
The 2027 World Cup will be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia in October and November. Simmons will continue to lead the Bangladesh team until the tournament, with BCB announcing the contract renewal in a press release.
Despite Bangladesh's disappointing performance in the Champions Trophy, BCB has expressed satisfaction with Simmons' work. His initial contract with the BCB was set to end after the 2025 Champions Trophy, but the board has now decided to extend it.
The Caribbean coach has secured the role for the next two and a half years, marking the beginning of a new phase after his first stint as head coach. After the departure of Chandika Hathurusingha, BCB had appointed the former West Indies cricketer as the national team coach on a six-month contract, extending only until the Champions Trophy. With this new contract, Simmons will now be in charge for a much longer term.
Expressing his excitement upon the contract renewal, Simmons said in a statement sent by BCB, “I am delighted to have the opportunity to work with Bangladesh Cricket for an extended period. There is no denying the talent in the team, and I believe together we have the potential to achieve something great. I’m looking forward to this journey. I have already worked with some incredible cricketers, and I see great potential within the team. Their skills and passion inspire me every day. Together, we will take Bangladesh cricket to new heights and achieve something special.”
Reflecting on his recent experience with Bangladesh, Simmons added, "My journey with Bangladesh Cricket over the last few months has truly been rewarding. The strength, commitment, and potential within the team are impressive. I am eager to help these players harness their full potential."
Simmons is now looking ahead with optimism, aiming to guide the team to greater success in the coming years.
