Not Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka Will Reach Super Four, Says Harsha
Just a few hours remain before the curtain rises on the 17th edition of the Asia Cup. On Tuesday (September 9), the tournament will kick off with the opening clash between Afghanistan and Hong Kong. Excitement is already building among cricket fans, and ahead of the opener, renowned analysts have begun breaking down the group stage prospects, team strengths and weaknesses, and possible star performers.
Among them is popular commentator Harsha Bhogle, who believes that Group ‘B’ will be the most competitive this year. In his analysis, both Afghanistan and Sri Lanka have built more balanced squads. With stronger batting and bowling depth, experience, and form, Harsha considers these two sides the leading contenders to reach the Super Four.
According to him, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka are the favorites in Group ‘B’, making them his picks to advance. On the other hand, he sees the group as particularly tough for Bangladesh.
Harsha further explained that Bangladesh have landed in a challenging group, as both Afghanistan and Sri Lanka look formidable. He especially praised Sri Lanka’s batting lineup and highlighted the strength of their pace and spin bowling units.
As for Afghanistan, Harsha identified their spin attack as their greatest asset. He placed Rashid Khan, Noor Ahmad, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, and Ghazanfar among the world’s top spinners, adding that each of them individually has the quality to be considered world-class.
He concluded:
“I back Sri Lanka to progress to the Super Four from this group, alongside Afghanistan. To me, both teams start as favorites in Group ‘B’. But as I said, this will be a very big tournament for Bangladesh.”
