Bangladesh suffered a significant defeat against Sri Lanka in the Test match. Under the leadership of Najmul Hossain Shanto, Bangladesh did not expect such a defeat at the beginning of the series, but it happened. The welcome party had to face defeat on the Sylhet pitch, contrary to their hopes. On such a day, Bangladesh's experienced batter Mominul Haque once again proved his capability.
Bangladesh aimed to chase Sri Lanka's target of 511 runs, but it wasn't an easy task for the Tigers. After failing to perform well in the first innings, Bangladesh also struggled in the second innings. They managed to score only 182 runs, with Mominul contributing an unbeaten 87 runs with the bat.
Speaking about Mominul's performance, Shanto said, "Sourav [Mominul] has shown his experience. He batted really well. If he had received support from the other end, maybe the game could have lasted for five days."
Mominul didn't receive much support from the other end. The batting performance displayed by the Bangladesh team in the last evening has disappointed the fans and supporters. The team lost five wickets for just 37 runs. In such a situation, Mominul was left alone at one end.
The Bangladesh pacers performed comparatively well. In the first innings, Sri Lanka was all out for 280 runs. Khalid Ahmed and promising young bowler Nahid Rana claimed three wickets each. In the second innings too, Nahid took two wickets while Khalid took one. Their performance was discussed during the press conference.
Regarding Nahid, Shanto said, "His approach was very good. The team has tried to give him what he wants. Sometimes things go here and there; he's a new guy. The way he has shown character is commendable. If he does things right, prepares well, stays fit, and we take care of him and remain patient with him, he will become a very good bowler in the future."
Khalid is already a familiar face in Bangladesh cricket. He remains hopeful as a new ball bowler. He has shown transparency even in the power-swinging area. Shanto said, "Khalid has bowled well as a new bowler. At the moment, Khalid has played more Tests. He has bowled very well. He has bowled well in both innings as a new bowler. There is more expectation from each player."
