Mahmudullah's Role Crucial for Bangladesh in Upcoming India Series, Says Captain Shanto
Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto emphasized the importance of the upcoming series against India for 38-year-old Mahmudullah Riyad. While it remains unclear whether Riyad will be part of the plans for the 2026 T20 World Cup, Shanto mentioned that Riyad may speak with the selectors.
During a press conference, Shanto stated, "As far as I understand, this series is very important for Riyad bhai. He might have a conversation with the selectors. I’m not entirely clear on that. Communication with the selectors and the board will definitely happen."
Riyad's inclusion in the squad for the India tour has faced criticism, with some questioning why Shamim Patowary wasn't chosen instead, considering the 2026 World Cup. However, Shanto defended Riyad, rejecting comparisons with Shamim.
He said, "Who are you comparing him to? Riyad bhai has been serving the Bangladesh team for many years and has performed well, winning many matches for us. Yes, he may not have finished many matches, but he has contributed significantly to our victories. Shamim is young and doing very well, but I don’t want to make comparisons at this stage. Whenever Shamim gets a chance, he will serve the Bangladesh team well. It doesn’t matter to me that Riyad bhai hasn’t scored runs in practice matches."
Regarding the return of Mehidy Hasan Miraz in place of Shakib Al Hasan, Shanto remarked, "If we can play on home soil, it’s a relief for every player. It’s new that Shakib bhai is not here. Miraz is with us, and I hope he starts well. Shakib bhai has been around for a long time. I won’t say it’s a problem, but it will be a bit challenging to form the XI. He contributed well in both aspects of the game. We have brought Miraz into the team, and I hope he will quickly adapt to his role."
Despite concerns about security in Gwalior, Shanto reported no issues so far, stating, "There have been no complaints regarding security as of now. We are doing well and can reach the field safely. I hope the matches go smoothly."
