Kane Williamson Retires from International Cricket

One of the greatest batters in New Zealand cricket history and the country’s highest-ever international run-scorer, Kane Williamson has announced his retirement from international cricket. The 35-year-old brings the curtain down on a remarkable 16-year career, stepping away from the international game with immediate effect.

Williamson made his debut for New Zealand in 2010 and went on to play 378 matches across all three formats. He finishes his career with 19,346 international runs, including 48 centuries and six double centuries. He had already retired from T20 International cricket last November.

Announcing his decision, Williamson said, “I’ve been thinking about this for a long time, but over the last few days it became clear that now is the right time. I’ve always had a huge passion and hunger for international cricket. I tried to give everything I had every time I represented New Zealand. It wouldn’t have been right to continue if I couldn’t do that. I’m grateful to be able to leave the game on my own terms.”

He added, “I’m very optimistic about the future of this team. There is an incredible amount of talent in the squad and a strong desire to achieve something special. The New Zealand team will always hold a special place in my heart.”

In addition to his achievements with the bat, Williamson enjoyed outstanding success as captain. Under his leadership, New Zealand won 22 of their 40 Test matches, the second-highest tally in the country’s history. He also led the team to 46 wins in 91 ODIs and 39 wins in 75 T20Is, both national records for a New Zealand captain.

Williamson captained New Zealand to the final of the 2019 Cricket World Cup, the final of the 2021 T20 World Cup, and the country’s first ICC World Test Championship title in 2021. He also led the side to the semi-finals of the 2016 and 2022 T20 World Cups, as well as the 2023 Cricket World Cup.
