ICC Trying to Persuade Pakistan on Champions Trophy Issue
The ICC is acting as a mediator to resolve the ongoing issues between India and Pakistan regarding the hosting of the Champions Trophy. ICC officials are reportedly encouraging the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to agree to a hybrid model for hosting the tournament.
According to ANI, reliable sources have stated that discussions are underway to convince the PCB. The ICC is explaining why the hybrid model is the best approach for hosting the Champions Trophy and emphasizing that no ICC tournament can proceed without the participation of the Indian cricket team. Sources also mentioned that senior ICC officials are attempting to dissuade Pakistan from making any controversial statements against India.
Pakistan is set to host the Champions Trophy next year, and discussions with other participating teams regarding the schedule are ongoing. Sources indicate that the schedule and venues might be finalized within a couple of days. India, the 2017 finalists, has refused to play their matches in Pakistan. As per sources, India's matches are likely to be held in the UAE.
Recently, the PCB sent a letter to the ICC seeking clarification on India’s refusal to travel to Pakistan for the tournament. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi stated that the board is still waiting for a response from the ICC.
He urged for the separation of sports and politics, saying,
"We have raised our questions with the ICC and are waiting for their reply. I firmly believe sports and politics should remain separate, and no country should mix the two. There is still positive hope regarding the Champions Trophy."
He further added,
"At this moment, all participating teams are ready to come to Pakistan. No one has any issues. I would reiterate, if India has any concerns, let them discuss those with us. We are open to addressing their concerns. I don't see any valid reason for them not to tour."
