With the BPL just around the corner, the dressing room of Noakhali Express is buzzing with preparation and intense competition for spots in the playing XI. In a team built with a blend of experience and youth, every player faces the challenge of proving themselves—and Mahidul Islam Ankon sees this challenge as an opportunity.
Noakhali Express has put together a strong squad for this season’s BPL. Surprisingly, the franchise secured both Zakir Ali Anik and Mahidul Islam Ankon in consecutive auction rounds, making headlines in the cricketing circles.
Ankon is ready to give his best whenever given a chance. While he keeps the dream of representing the national team in mind, he is also willing to adapt to any role for the team’s benefit. He shared his personal goals and national aspirations with the media.
Speaking about his ambitions for the national team, Mahidul Islam Ankon said,"Of course, every player wants to play good cricket and represent the national team, and perform well for the national side. I also have my goals; wherever I get a chance to play for the team, I want to contribute. I feel that if I can play good cricket, insha’Allah, good opportunities will come."
He also clarified his perspective on positions in the team. The middle-order batsman explained that in modern T20 cricket, players must be ready to perform outside fixed positions depending on the situation. On the team’s strategy and positional changes, Ankon said,
"Those of us who play in the middle or lower order, anyone’s position can change. So if we set in advance that I will play in this position, that won’t work. But the discussion is about who will come in at which position and when, and what plans each player has, and then we play accordingly."
The Noakhali Express squad also includes experienced Afghan all-rounder Mohammad Nabi. Ankon expressed his eagerness to learn from Nabi and highlighted the importance of such experience for the team’s success. On utilizing Nabi’s experience, he said,
"It will definitely be very useful. He (Mohammad Nabi) has been playing T20 cricket for many years and also many BPL seasons. I hope we can play good cricket as a team."
Ankon believes Noakhali has built a championship-worthy squad. However, he emphasized that the team’s fate will depend on how well they play structured cricket collectively on the field. Hence, he intends to focus on consistent performance throughout the season. On the team’s goal and his own approach, Ankon said,
"Everyone’s goal is to become champions. But I feel that how well we play structured cricket as a team from the start, and how well everyone performs—that is important. Playing well in every match is far more crucial."
