South African wicketkeeper-batsman Heinrich Klaasen, widely regarded as one of the finest white-ball players of his generation, has announced his retirement from international cricket at the age of 33. The announcement came unexpectedly through a heartfelt post on his social media accounts.
“It’s a sad day for me as I announce my decision to step away from international cricket. This was a very tough decision, but one I’ve found complete peace with,” Klaasen wrote on Instagram, expressing how emotionally difficult the choice was.
Since making his international debut in 2018, Klaasen has represented South Africa in 4 Tests, 60 One Day Internationals, and 58 T20 Internationals, making a total of 122 appearances for the Proteas.
In ODIs, Klaasen scored 2,141 runs at an impressive average of 43.69, including a career-best score of 174. In T20Is, he accumulated 1,000 runs, with a highest score of 81 and a blistering strike rate of 141.84.
He had already retired from Test cricket in January 2024.
Klaasen also expressed gratitude to all the coaches, teammates, and support staff who guided him throughout his journey, acknowledging their vital roles in his development as a cricketer.
While Klaasen's international chapter has come to a close, fans will likely continue to enjoy his performances in domestic and franchise leagues around the world.
