Hashan Tillakaratne Steps Down as Bangladesh Women's Cricket Team Head Coach
Hashan Tillakaratne, the former Sri Lankan cricketer and 1996 World Cup winner, has stepped down from his position as the head coach of the Bangladesh Women’s National Cricket Team. His tenure came to an end following the Bangladesh women’s tour of the West Indies, with Hashan Tillakaratne returning to his home country, Sri Lanka, on February 8.
Hashan Tillakaratne was appointed as the head coach of the Bangladesh women's cricket team in October 2022, signing a two-year contract with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). Before taking up this role, Hashan Tillakaratne had previously served as the coach for the Sri Lanka Women’s National Cricket Team.
After spending more than two years with Bangladesh, Hashan Tillakaratne decided to step down. His final assignment was the West Indies tour last month, where the team faced disappointing results. During the tour, Bangladesh lost the ODI series 2-1 and were whitewashed 3-0 in the T20 series, a humiliating end to his tenure with the team, led by Nigar Sultana Jyoti.
Hashan Tillakaratne, who was a pivotal part of Sri Lanka’s historic 1996 World Cup win, played 83 Test matches for Sri Lanka, accumulating 4545 runs at an average of 42.87, with 11 centuries and 20 fifties. In 200 ODIs, he scored 3789 runs at an average of 29.60, with 2 centuries and 13 fifties to his name.
