In a thrilling encounter of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), Sylhet Titans edged past Dhaka Capitals by 6 runs at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on Thursday. Afghan all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai emerged as the hero of the match with a brilliant all-round performance.
After winning the toss, Dhaka Capitals opted to field first. Sylhet, however, suffered early setbacks as opener Rony Talukdar and captain Mehedi Hasan Miraz were dismissed cheaply, putting the batting side under pressure. In the middle overs, Parvez Hossain Emon (44) and Saim Ayub (29) steadied the innings and helped rebuild.
Azmatullah Omarzai then provided the late surge, smashing an unbeaten 50 off just 24 balls, including five fours and three sixes. Useful contributions from Ethan Brooks in the final over helped Sylhet Titans post a competitive total of 173 for 5 in their allotted 20 overs.
Chasing a target of 174, Dhaka Capitals suffered a dramatic collapse early on. Their top order failed to fire, leaving the team reeling at 43 for 5 at one stage. Amid the chaos, Shamim Hossain stood firm at one end and produced a sensational knock. He remained unbeaten on 81 off 43 balls, striking nine fours and three sixes, but his valiant effort was not enough to take Dhaka over the line.
Under pressure, the Sylhet bowlers maintained discipline in the death overs, restricting Dhaka Capitals to 167 for 8 in 20 overs.
Omarzai also made a significant impact with the ball, claiming 3 wickets for 4 overs. Mohammad Amir and Nasum Ahmed chipped in with two wickets each.
With this victory, Sylhet Titans strengthened their position on the points table, while Dhaka Capitals were left disappointed despite fighting hard until the very end.
