The first day of the Test match in Kanpur was marked by interruptions, with play halted after just 9 overs following the lunch break. Due to thick dark clouds, all floodlights at the stadium were activated, but the initial lighting conditions were deemed unsuitable for play. Rain soon followed, further delaying the game. By the end of the day, Bangladesh had lost 3 wickets, ending their innings at 107 runs from 35 overs, with Mominul Haque scoring 40 runs off 81 balls and Mushfiqur Rahim remaining not out on 6 runs from 13 balls.
Bangladesh faced early setbacks, losing both openers in the first session against India. Before heading into lunch, the team managed 74 runs, but Zakir Hasan fell for a duck after facing 24 balls. Sadman Islam was the second wicket to fall, leaving Bangladesh in a precarious position. However, Mominul and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto steadied the innings until lunch. After the break, Shanto was dismissed for 31 runs off 57 balls, falling prey to Ravichandran Ashwin.
Initially, openers Sadman Islam and Zakir Hasan had a trouble-free first half-hour, but despite settling in, Zakir could not open his account. He was dismissed in the very first over bowled by Akash Deep. Sadman followed shortly after, falling to a leg before wicket (LBW) appeal after a review confirmed his dismissal. At 29 runs, Bangladesh found themselves with two quick wickets down, but Mominul and Shanto offered a glimmer of hope for the team moving forward.
