Controversy over PSL ban, Muzarabanis agent responds strongly
Zimbabwe fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani has been handed a two-year ban by the Pakistan Super League (PSL), sparking significant controversy. His agent, Rob Humphries, has opposed the decision, calling the punishment “extremely excessive.”
In a statement, Humphries claimed that no formal contract was ever signed between Muzarabani and PSL or Islamabad United. According to him, although an offer was made on February 13 for the 2026 season, it was conditional upon obtaining a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from Zimbabwe Cricket. However, obtaining an NOC requires an official contract first—something that was never provided.
The statement further added, “You simply cannot breach a contract you have never received.” Humphries believes the entire situation is the result of an administrative failure on the part of the PSL, making such a severe punishment unjustified.
According to the sequence of events, nearly two weeks passed without any official contract being sent. During that time, Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Kolkata Knight Riders approached Muzarabani with an offer. He agreed to a deal worth around $160,000 and decided to play in the IPL.
On the other hand, the PSL and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) maintain a different stance. They argue that both parties had agreed on key terms, including remuneration, through written communication, which constitutes a binding agreement. From their perspective, joining the IPL instead amounts to a breach of that agreement.
The PCB has stated that there are no plans to review the ban. As a result, Muzarabani will remain ineligible to participate in the PSL until 2029.
In a similar case earlier, South African fast bowler Corbin Bosch received only a one-year ban. According to the board, his relatively cooperative approach led to a lighter punishment.
Meanwhile, Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka was also involved in a similar situation, leaving a PSL contract to join the IPL with Rajasthan Royals. However, the PSL has not yet made a final decision regarding his case.
Overall, the controversy has raised fresh questions about the validity of agreements based on verbal or written communication versus formally signed contracts.
