Chief selector's explanation on Shakib's inclusion in the team
There were initial concerns about whether Shakib Al Hasan would be part of the upcoming series against Pakistan due to his political affiliations and his silence during the anti-discrimination movement, which had brought him under scrutiny. Additionally, there were security concerns. However, all doubts have been cleared, and Shakib is included in the squad for the Pakistan series.
The chief selector of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu, provided a detailed explanation on Monday, a day after the squad announcement, about why Shakib was included in the team despite not participating in the training camp. Shakib has been playing in foreign T20 leagues and has not joined the national team for practice.
Regarding why Shakib was included in the Test series against Pakistan without participating in practice, Ashraf Hossain Lipu explained, "It is based on his performance. He has earned his place with his performance. He has experience in various formats, and considering his record against Pakistan, everything has been taken into account."
The chief selector clarified that Shakib was included based on his talent rather than his political identity. He said, "Of course, we are concerned about the current situation. We need to ensure his security. Shakib Al Hasan is a top player for Bangladesh. In the selection process, we considered his talent primarily. Although he is a political figure, the decision was based on his ability."
Although the team was scheduled to leave for Pakistan on August 17, they are departing today. Since Shakib is currently abroad, there was a question about when he would join the team in Pakistan. The chief selector responded, "During the Zimbabwe series, we wanted to know his plans until December. We have eight Test matches, and there was discussion about his availability. He assured us, and we had proper email correspondence to confirm his participation. Based on logistics, he will join the team in Pakistan on either the 14th or 15th."
The chief selector also mentioned that there has been regular communication with Shakib, adding, "We have been in touch with Shakib, and communication has been ongoing. We checked in on him last month and this month as well. The process involves keeping track of players who are abroad. We have also been in touch with Shariful."
