Chairman changes handled with humor, Simmons redirects discussion to cricket
The pace of administrative changes at the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) in recent times has been so rapid that questions on the issue continue to follow national team head coach Phil Simmons. However, no matter how many questions are asked, the Caribbean coach once again responded in his usual calm and slightly humorous manner, clearly stating his position. At times direct, at times brief, his responses made it clear that it is not the boardroom reshuffle but on-field cricket that remains his sole focus.
During a recent press conference, Simmons was asked, “Have you ever seen someone become a board chairman this quickly after finishing their playing career?” He smiled briefly before answering and attempted to steer the conversation back to cricket, saying, “Stay with cricket.”
Following Tamim Iqbal’s assumption of a new role, Simmons addressed the media for the first time. When asked whether such rapid changes in the BCB had surprised him, he stated clearly, “Nothing surprises me anymore in life. And I am not saying this only about Bangladesh; this is life in general. I have been through many things and I know that a lot can happen every day. So I am not surprised by anything.”
He further added, “They are not coming in as head coach. My job is to prepare the team, and that is exactly what I am doing.”
Overall, steering clear of administrative discussions, Simmons’ focus remains entirely on the upcoming New Zealand series. Backed by the confidence gained from the series win against Pakistan, he is aiming to maintain the same momentum against the Kiwis.
