In the morning session, Taijul Islam completed his five-wicket haul, taking three wickets and solidifying his status as Bangladesh's standout bowler. Following Taijul's success, Naeem Rana claimed the first wicket for Bangladesh's pace attack in this Test, marking a significant moment for the team. Despite being 423 runs for six wickets down, South Africa’s Wiaan Mulder and Senuran Muthusamy threatened to extend their lead further. By the time the teams went for tea on the second day, South Africa had amassed 527 runs for six wickets.
This marked the first time since 2013 that South Africa scored over 500 runs in an innings on Asian soil. The team was on track to set a new record against Bangladesh, as they previously scored 587 runs in Chattogram back in 2008. Sixteen years later, Aiden Markram's side had the opportunity to surpass that total.
The Chattogram Test is crucial for Bangladesh, serving as a must-win match to keep their hopes alive in the series after losing the first Test in Mirpur. Being on the back foot early in the first innings puts added pressure on the team.
During the second session of the day, South Africa continued their domination, scoring 114 runs for the loss of just one wicket in 25 overs. By tea, Muthusamy was unbeaten on 47, while Mulder contributed 78, with their partnership exceeding 104 runs, pushing South Africa to a formidable position.
