Babar-Rizwan Combo Not Ideal for Modern T20s, Says Former Pacer Sohail Tanvir

Former Pakistan fast bowler Sohail Tanvir has called for a shake-up in Pakistan’s T20 batting approach, suggesting that the team should consider selecting only one of Babar Azam or Mohammad Rizwan — rather than both — in the playing XI.

Tanvir expressed concern over the duo’s similar style of play, which he believes slows down Pakistan’s start in the powerplay, often putting the team at a disadvantage in the fast-paced T20 format.

"Babar and Rizwan are both quality players. But their style doesn't align with the demands of modern T20 cricket. When both open the innings, we often pay the price for a slow start," Tanvir said in a recent interview.

While acknowledging that the pair tends to accelerate later in the innings, Tanvir argued that such late surges often come too late to change the game’s outcome. He advocated for introducing a more aggressive opener — such as Saim Ayub or another domestic talent — who can score quickly from the outset.

Tanvir also noted that Pakistan’s traditionally strong bowling line-up has often masked the shortcomings in the batting department. However, as bowlers have become less consistent, the flaws in the batting unit have become more apparent.

"They still have time to evolve. I’m not saying they need to hit a six every ball, but they must adapt to play a more aggressive brand of cricket," he added.

Specifically referring to Babar Azam, Tanvir urged the former captain to expand his range of shots and draw inspiration from the adaptability of players like Virat Kohli and Kane Williamson — who have reshaped their games to remain effective in T20s.

He concluded with a pointed question:

"Babar is undoubtedly a skilled player, but the real question is — does he even want to change?"
