Abhishek Sharmas World Cup Struggle: Three Matches Without Runs, Confidence Intact
Indian batter Abhishek Sharma has not had the start he would have hoped for in the T20 World Cup. Failing to score in three consecutive matches, he has become a major talking point in the international cricketing arena. The results have raised questions not only among fans but also among experts, particularly regarding his shot selection and mental preparedness.
However, both the player and the team have responded positively to the situation. Recently, Abhishek said, “I enjoy batting. My main focus is to concentrate on the process. Over the last two years, I have learned that taking pressure does not help. Maintaining consistency in the process is the most important thing.”
He further added, “Ups and downs are natural for every batter. In some innings you score runs, in others you don’t. But I will not change my process or my mindset.”
The team captain has also stood firmly by him. Speaking at a press conference, India captain Suryakumar said, “I am not worried at all about Abhishek’s failures. Our focus is on the opposition we are about to face. He has our full support. What he did last year, it is time for him to repay that now. I am not concerned about him.”
Bowling coach Morne Morkel has also confirmed that there is no controversy or negative discussion within the team regarding Abhishek’s performances. His recent record before the World Cup had been impressive. Just ahead of the tournament, in a home series against New Zealand, he scored 182 runs in three matches at a strike rate of nearly 250. There were expectations that he would carry that momentum into the World Cup. However, after going runless in three group-stage matches, his current form has come under scrutiny.
Early in his career, Abhishek had also faced a difficult phase. At that time, the backing of the captain and team management helped him retain his confidence. Now, he appears to be following the same approach—focusing on his process and working to regain form with belief and composure.
India will face South Africa in the Super Eight on Sunday. Experts believe that the team’s support, the captain’s confidence, and Abhishek’s mental resilience could play a crucial role in helping him bounce back effectively.
