Abahani Clinch DPL Title with Victory Over Mohammedan in Virtual Final
Abahani Limited emerged as champions of the 2024–25 Dhaka Premier League (DPL) after defeating arch-rivals Mohammedan Sporting Club by six wickets in what was effectively a final. With this win, Abahani secured their 24th DPL title and completed a hat-trick of championships, having also won the previous two editions.
Heading into the Super League’s final round, both teams had everything to play for—whoever won, took the title. In a tense clash at Mirpur’s Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, it was Mosaddek Hossain’s Abahani who prevailed, finishing the season with 14 wins from 16 matches and a total of 28 points.
Mohammedan, missing their regular captain Towhid Hridoy due to suspension, took the field under the leadership of Rony Talukdar. Despite twin fifties from Mahmudullah and Ariful Islam, Mohammedan could only post a modest total of 240 for 7 in 50 overs. The innings started brightly with Rony and Taufiq Khan Tushar adding quick runs at the top, but once the openers were dismissed within 16 runs of each other, the scoring rate slowed and wickets fell regularly.
Mahmudullah and Ariful steadied the innings with a 90-run fifth-wicket partnership, both registering fifties. Mahmudullah scored 50 off 62 balls (4 fours, 1 six), while Ariful matched the score with a 57-ball knock (3 fours, 2 sixes). Rony also contributed with a 47-ball 45. Abahani captain Mosaddek and pacer Mrittunjoy Chowdhury each took two wickets to restrict Mohammedan to a chaseable target.
Chasing 241, Abahani suffered an early setback with Shahriar Kamal dismissed cheaply. However, opener Parvez Hossain Emon and No. 3 batter Zishan Alam built a solid platform. Although Emon fell for 28 and Meherob Hassan soon followed for 10, Zishan scored a composed 55 off 53 balls (6 fours, 1 six) before being dismissed.
From 108 for 4, the experienced duo of Mohammad Mithun and captain Mosaddek Hossain ensured there were no further hiccups. Mithun struck a half-century, and Mosaddek joined him with a fifty of his own, guiding Abahani to a comfortable win with their unbeaten stand.
Mohammedan's bowling attack, otherwise known for its strength, failed to break through in the crucial final phase of the match, as Abahani sealed yet another DPL crown in dominant fashion.
