On the fifth day of the Kanpur Test, Bangladesh found themselves in a difficult position. Mominul Haque, the centurion from the first innings, was unable to make an impact this time. However, opener Sadman Islam provided some relief by becoming the first Bangladeshi opener to score a fifty in a Test match on Indian soil. Unfortunately, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto's performance only worsened the team's situation, as he failed to score more than 1 run. Liton Das also went for a duck, and eventually, Mushfiqur Rahim was bowled out, leaving Bangladesh all out for 146 runs.
To win the Kanpur Test, India needed 95 runs. Just before the lunch break, Jasprit Bumrah bowled Mushfiqur, who had scored 37 runs.
Starting the final day with 2 wickets down for 26 runs, Bangladesh was still trailing by 26 runs. The previous day's two unbeaten batsmen, Sadman Islam and Mominul Haque, entered the field with a mindset to bat for a long time. However, Mominul fell into Ravichandran Ashwin's trap, getting caught in the leg slip after playing an unnecessary sweep shot. After being unbeaten on 107 in the first innings, Mominul managed only 2 runs in the second.
Following Mominul's departure, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto joined Sadman at the crease. The two left-handed batsmen worked together to raise the team's score, eventually taking the lead. However, Ravindra Jadeja brought India a crucial breakthrough by bowling Shanto out for 19 runs with his second delivery of the 28th over, caught off a reverse sweep.
Sadman reached his fifty off 97 balls, marking a record as the first Bangladeshi opener to score a fifty in Tests on Indian soil. However, he could not add to his score, falling to Akash Deep, caught by Yashasvi Jaiswal in the gully region.
With the loss of Shanto and Sadman in consecutive overs, two new batsmen, Mushfiqur Rahim and Liton Das, took the crease. Unfortunately, Liton was dismissed in the next over after facing just 8 balls, getting caught off a delivery that deflected off his gloves to wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant. This marked the third time in the last four Tests that Liton had fallen to Jadeja.
Bangladesh appeared helpless against Jadeja's spin. Shakib Al Hasan, in what may have been his last Test innings abroad, was dismissed for a duck, caught off a return catch to Jadeja. Frustrated, Shakib left the field without scoring. Just before the lunch break, Jasprit Bumrah took the wicket of Mehedi Hasan Miraz for 9 runs, leaving Mushfiqur with Taijul Islam as the last partner at the crease.
