Rassie van der Dussen Announces Retirement from International Cricket
South Africa’s top-order batter Rassie van der Dussen has announced his retirement from international cricket. The cricketer, who was on a hybrid central contract with Cricket South Africa (CSA), was not re-signed for the 2026–27 season. Having been out of the national team for the past seven months, van der Dussen will now focus on representing his domestic side Lions, playing franchise cricket, and coaching and mentoring the next generation.
In an Instagram post on Thursday morning, van der Dussen wrote, “It is with a proud heart and a profound sense of gratitude that I announce my retirement from international cricket. Wearing the Proteas jersey is an honour that demands resilience and dedication. Representing my country has been the greatest honour of my life.”
He thanked the officials of Lions, the coaching staff of CSA, his agent Chris Cardoso, and his wife Lara. He also expressed gratitude to the people of South Africa and the fans, advising young players to “dream big and give everything you have to achieve your dreams.”
Between October 2018 and August 2025, van der Dussen played 18 Tests, 71 ODIs, and 57 T20Is for South Africa. He made his biggest impact in the ODI format, scoring six centuries and 17 half-centuries. His average is the second-highest in South Africa’s history, behind only AB de Villiers.
Van der Dussen was part of South Africa’s squad for the 2019 World Cup, where he was one of the team’s standout performers. He continued his consistent performances in the 2023 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy.
Despite a promising start in Test cricket, he ends his career without a century in the format. He last played Tests during the 2021–22 tour of Australia and did not feature again afterward.
South Africa’s director of national teams, Enoch Nkwe, praised van der Dussen’s contribution, saying, “Beyond his on-field performances, he played an important role in the dressing room. His contribution to team culture and standards is undeniable.”
Although his international career has come to an end, the experienced batter is expected to remain involved in cricket in the future through coaching and mentoring roles.
