Bangladesh’s women’s cricket team is set to grace another global stage this summer in England. A combination of consistent performance in the qualifiers and favorable points calculations has secured their ticket to the World Cup. While on-field victories made the task easier, the outcomes of other matches also opened the door for Bangladesh to reach the main tournament.
By defeating Thailand by 39 runs, Nigar Sultana Jyoti’s team registered their fifth consecutive win in the qualifying round. Following this victory, the United States lost to the Netherlands, officially confirming Bangladesh’s participation in the World Cup. The Netherlands has also secured their spot. Both teams will compete in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup scheduled in England this June.
On Wednesday (28 January) in Mulpani, Nepal, Bangladesh, having lost the toss, opted to bat first and scored 165 runs for 8 wickets in the allotted 20 overs. This is Bangladesh’s fourth-highest team total in Women’s T20 cricket. In response, Thailand were restricted to 126 runs, with Bangladesh’s bowlers maintaining complete control of the match.
Earlier, Bangladesh had topped the points table in the group stage with four consecutive wins against Ireland, the United States, Papua New Guinea, and Namibia, thereby progressing to the Super Six stage. With the win over Thailand, the Tigresses continue to lead the Super Six standings. Three wins in three matches have earned them 6 points, keeping them at the top of the table.
According to tournament rules, points earned against teams faced in the group stage, such as Ireland and the United States, carry over to the Super Six. Teams in this round do not play again against opponents they already faced in the group stage, meaning each team will play three matches in the Super Six, with points counted across a total of five matches. Currently, Bangladesh’s net run rate stands at 1.150, strengthening their position further.
The top four teams from the Super Six will qualify for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, which will take place from 12 June to 5 July across England and Wales with 12 teams in contention.
