Smriti-Shafali Fifties Power India to Womens Asia Cup Triumph

India Women were crowned champions of the Women’s Asia Cup for the eighth time after defeating Sri Lanka Women by a massive 72-run margin in the grand final at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Powered by explosive half-centuries from openers Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma, followed by outstanding bowling from Shree Charani and Deepti Sharma, India secured a one-sided victory.

After winning the toss, Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur elected to bat first. The decision paid off as openers Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma turned the game in India’s favour with a dominant opening partnership. The duo put together a massive 129-run stand in 12.3 overs.

Shafali Verma played a blistering innings of 68 off 39 balls, smashing nine fours and two sixes. Mandhana also scored a quickfire 59 off 39 deliveries, hitting five fours and three sixes. A late cameo from Gunalan Kamalini, who remained unbeaten on 15 off five balls, helped India post a huge total of 183 for five in their allotted 20 overs.

Chasing 184, Sri Lankan captain Chamari Athapaththu and Vishmi Gunaratne tried to fight back, adding 58 runs for the second wicket. However, after Athapaththu was dismissed for 36 and Gunaratne departed for 20, the Sri Lankan middle order collapsed like a house of cards. Sri Lanka kept losing wickets at regular intervals as they struggled against the spin of Shree Charani and Deepti Sharma.

Charani claimed four wickets for just 20 runs in her four overs. Deepti Sharma provided excellent support, taking three wickets for 19 runs. Sri Lanka Women were eventually bowled out for 111 in 20 overs.

For her all-round performance of 68 runs off 39 balls and a crucial wicket, Shafali Verma was named Player of the Match in the final.
