Avishka Fernando recalled for ODI tri-series against Pakistan and England, Asalanka dropped

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has announced a strong 16-member squad for the upcoming ODI tri-series against Pakistan and England. The biggest surprise in the announced squad is the recall of explosive opener Avishka Fernando after a long absence. However, Charith Asalanka has been dropped, while star all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga missed out due to an injury.

This marks Avishka Fernando's first return to the ODI side since February 2025. The top-order batter earned his call-up back to Sri Lanka's national colors courtesy of an impressive streak in domestic cricket. In the Major Clubs Limited Over Tournament—Sri Lanka's domestic 50-over competition—an in-form Avishka scored 447 runs at an average of 63.85, which includes two centuries and a career-best inning of 160.

Asalanka had to make way for Avishka's inclusion. He was also recently left out of the T20I squad against Pakistan.

The rest of the squad remains mostly unchanged from the side that was swept 3-0 on their recent tour of England. Combining experience and emerging talent, the batting department includes Pathum Nissanka, captain Kusal Mendis, Kamil Mishara, Pavan Rathnayake, Kamindu Mendis, Janith Liyanage, and Dasun Shanaka.

The ODI tri-series will kick off on October 18 in Rawalpindi, with Sri Lanka facing hosts Pakistan in the tournament opener.

Sri Lanka Squad: Pathum Nissanka, Avishka Fernando, Kamil Mishara, Kusal Mendis (capt, wk), Pavan Rathnayake, Sahan Arachchige, Kamindu Mendis, Janith Liyanage, Dasun Shanaka, Dunith Wellalage, Maheesh Theekshana, Sachindu Colombage, Dushmantha Chameera, Asitha Fernando, Dilshan Madushanka, and Eshan Malinga.
