Ben Stokes Announces Retirement from International Cricket
England cricket fans have been dealt a major blow as captain Ben Stokes has announced his retirement from international cricket during the ongoing final Test against New Zealand. The decision brings an end to his illustrious 15-year international career and four-year tenure as England’s Test captain.
The news was confirmed on the fourth day of the third Test at Trent Bridge. Ahead of the match, Stokes had hinted during the pre-match press conference that it could be his final appearance in international cricket. Before play began on Sunday morning, he informed his teammates and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) of his final decision.
Nightclub Controversy and ECB Warning
Stokes’ sudden decision is believed to have been influenced by a series of recent off-field incidents. Following England’s victory in the Lord’s Test, the ECB and the Cricket Regulator launched an investigation after Stokes was seen celebrating until the early hours at a nightclub in London’s Chelsea district. As a result, he missed the second Test at The Oval. Although the Cricket Regulator ultimately issued him a formal written warning without imposing any major disciplinary action, it is understood that the mental strain caused by the controversy also played a role in accelerating his decision to retire.
A Fighter Until the End
Despite announcing his retirement, Stokes displayed the same fighting spirit for which he is renowned. Determined to keep England alive in the match and level the series against New Zealand, the all-rounder bowled two long spells on the fourth day at Trent Bridge, giving everything for his team in what is set to be his final international appearance.
