Sarfaraz Ahmed Retires from International Cricket

Former Pakistan Test captain and ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2006 and ICC Champions Trophy 2017-winning captain Sarfaraz Ahmed has announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing an end to a nearly two-decade-long distinguished career.

Sarfaraz featured in all three formats – 54 Tests, 117 ODIs, and 61 T20Is. Across formats, he scored a total of 6,164 runs, including six centuries and 35 half-centuries. Behind the stumps, he took 315 catches and completed 56 stumpings.

He captained Pakistan in 100 international matches (50 ODIs, 37 T20Is, 13 Tests), and under his leadership, Pakistan reached the top of the T20I world rankings. During his captaincy, Pakistan set a world record with 11 consecutive T20I series wins and achieved six clean sweeps.

During his leadership era, several emerging Pakistani stars made their mark, including Babar Azam, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Hasan Ali, Imam-ul-Haq, Faheem Ashraf, Fakhar Zaman, and Shadab Khan, whom he supported at the start of their international careers.

Sarfaraz led Pakistan to historic triumph in the ICC Champions Trophy, defeating India by 180 runs in the final. With this victory, he became the first Pakistan captain to win the Champions Trophy and the only captain to win ICC titles at both junior and senior levels, having earlier led Pakistan to the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in 2006 in Sri Lanka, defeating India by 38 runs.

In recognition of his contributions, Sarfaraz Ahmed was awarded the Pride of Performance in 2018, becoming the youngest Pakistan captain to receive the honor.

Among his personal records, Sarfaraz holds the Pakistan record for 10 catches in a Test match, achieved against South Africa in Johannesburg in 2019. He is also the only Pakistani wicketkeeper-batter to score an ODI century at Lord’s, which he did against England in 2016.

Sarfaraz’s international career began in 2007 with an ODI and concluded in 2023 with a Test match against Australia.

Sarfaraz Ahmed said, “Representing Pakistan has been the greatest honor of my life. From leading the U19 team to a world title in 2006 to winning the ICC Champions Trophy in 2017, every moment in Pakistan colors has been special. I am grateful to my teammates, coaches, family, and supporters for their unwavering support.”
