Bangladesh Batters Play Against Rashid, Not His Deliveries: Mushtaq
Bangladesh collapsed to 109 all out while chasing a modest target of 191, suffering an 81-run defeat to Afghanistan in the second ODI. Despite bowling Afghanistan out for just 190 runs, the Tigers failed to handle Rashid Khan’s spin, as the leg-spinner completely dismantled Bangladesh’s batting order.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Bangladesh spin bowling coach Mushtaq Ahmed shared his thoughts on the team’s inability to play Rashid effectively.
He remarked, “I think our batters play against Rashid, not against his deliveries.”
Mushtaq explained that facing Rashid requires patience and clarity rather than aggression. “Rashid doesn’t spin the ball too much, but he’s very experienced and a genuine wicket-taker,” he said.
“In these kinds of conditions, you need clear scoring options against a bowler like him. It’s better to play him straight with the full face of the bat. You can’t always hit big shots against such quality bowlers. Our batters need to learn that.”
The veteran coach also pointed out that Bangladesh’s batting issues are not just technical but also mental. “You can’t judge a player’s talent just from one performance. Our bowling unit is doing well — both pacers and spinners. Once the batting improves, we can challenge any side,” Mushtaq added. “The problem lies in both skill and mentality. The batters are trying hard, but there’s still a mental barrier they need to overcome.”
