Litton Unaware of Any Discussion on Test Captaincy
Litton Das says he has not yet been approached about the possibility of becoming Bangladesh’s next Test captain. While his leadership in T20Is has brought a wave of positivity and success to the team, the wicketkeeper-batter insists there has been no communication from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) regarding the vacant Test captaincy.
Under Litton’s captaincy, Bangladesh have won their last four T20I series and came close to reaching the Asia Cup final — signs that the team is growing in confidence under his guidance. However, following Najmul Hossain Shanto’s decision to step down from the Test captaincy after the Sri Lanka series in June, discussions have begun about who should lead the red-ball side.
Ahead of the West Indies T20I series in Chattogram, Litton said at a press conference,
“I haven’t heard anything about it yet. If they (BCB) think I’m the right person, they will definitely talk to me. Let’s see what happens.”
Litton has experience leading the national side in all three formats. In 2023, he captained Bangladesh in a Test against Afghanistan when Shakib Al Hasan was injured — a match Bangladesh won by a record 546 runs. Despite being considered for the role last year, the board eventually appointed Shanto as Test captain.
The 30-year-old admitted that he would welcome the opportunity if given the responsibility, saying,
“As a player, captaining your country in Test cricket is a huge honor. I don’t think anyone would say no to that. But as of now, nothing has been said from their (BCB’s) side.”
For now, Litton’s focus remains firmly on the upcoming T20I series against the West Indies and Ireland — six matches that will serve as crucial preparation ahead of next year’s T20 World Cup.
“To be honest, I want our players to face challenges in these two series — whether it’s in batting or bowling,” Litton said.
“The more we play under pressure, the better it will be for us. These situations will help us a lot in the future.”
