The second day of the first Test between Bangladesh and Ireland at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium was all about Bangladesh. The Tigers asserted control with both bat and ball, making it a day to remember for the home side. Early in the morning, Bangladesh wrapped up Ireland’s last two wickets in just 14 deliveries. Then, openers Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Shadman Islam led a solid reply as Bangladesh ended the day on 338 for 1, replying to Ireland’s 286.

Mahmudul Hasan Joy was the standout performer, remaining unbeaten on 169 off 283 balls. Supporting him brilliantly, Mominul Haque finished the day on 80 not out. However, Shadman Islam’s innings ended in heartbreak — he fell for 80, missing out on a well-deserved century. Speaking at the post-day press conference, Shadman reflected on his innings and the partnership with Joy.

Shadman explained that his attacking intent wasn’t part of any pre-planned strategy. He said,

“There was no such plan. Joy and I were talking about how the ball and the wicket were behaving. When we started batting in the morning, there wasn’t much assistance. We just tried to make the most of the boundary balls, which probably helped us get a good score early on.”

His 80 off 104 deliveries showcased confident stroke play and sharp shot selection — an innings that reminded many of a one-day style of batting rather than a traditional Test knock.

At the other end, Joy played a classic Test innings marked by patience and discipline. Shadman lauded his partner’s effort and expressed hope that Joy would convert his start into something even bigger.

“Alhamdulillah, Joy is batting beautifully, and he’s still there. I hope and pray he can go on to get an even bigger and better score for us.”

Though satisfied with his contribution, Shadman admitted to feeling the sting of missing out on a century. Yet, he remained optimistic and determined to make the most of future chances.

“Of course, there’s always a bit of regret when you miss a century. Alhamdulillah, I’m grateful for whatever Allah has given me. I’ll try to build on this and, if I get set again in future innings, make it even bigger.”

By the end of Day Two, confidence was high in the Bangladesh camp. With a strong position in the first innings, the Tigers firmly hold the advantage heading into the next day’s play.
