BCB Forms Three-Member Committee to Investigate Jahanaras Allegations
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has formed a three-member inquiry committee to investigate the sexual harassment allegations made by former national women’s team captain Jahanara Alam, which have stirred significant controversy in Bangladesh women’s cricket. The BCB announced the decision in a media release on Saturday (November 8).
According to the statement, the committee will be headed by Justice Tariq ul Hakim, retired judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh. The other two members are Rubaba Dowla, Director of the Bangladesh Cricket Board, and Barrister Sarwat Siraj Shukla, Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court and President of the Bangladesh Women’s Sports Association.
The BCB stated that the committee was formed following recent allegations of misconduct against several members of the women’s national team, as well as the sexual harassment claims made public by former captain Jahanara Alam.
In a YouTube interview on November 6 with sports journalist Riasad Azim, Jahanara alleged that she was sexually harassed by former national women’s team selector and manager Manjurul Islam Manju and the late former team in-charge Tauhid Mahmud.
Jahanara claimed in the interview that she had reported the incidents to the BCB but received no action in response. Following the publication of her statements, the matter sparked widespread discussion across the cricket fraternity. Subsequently, several other women cricketers came forward with further allegations of irregularities and misconduct. In addition, a few current players of the national team were accused of breaching the team’s code of conduct.
In response to these developments, the BCB took action by forming the inquiry committee to thoroughly examine the incidents and provide necessary recommendations.
According to the BCB’s media department, the committee will begin its work soon, and the board will take appropriate measures once the report is submitted.
