India Whitewashes Sri Lanka in Thrilling Super Over in Pallekele
In a match that went into a Super Over, India's Washington Sundar bowled a wide on the first ball against Sri Lanka. He then dismissed Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka in the next two deliveries. India needed just 3 runs to win the Super Over, and Suryakumar Yadav finished the game with a boundary on the first ball. With this victory, India won the third match and completed a 3-0 whitewash over Sri Lanka.
At the Pallekele International Stadium, after losing the toss, India batted first but had a shaky start. Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed for 11 runs, and Sanju Samson followed him with a duck. The captain also failed to make an impact, as Suryakumar Yadav was out for 8 runs off 9 balls.
Amid the flurry of wickets, Shubman Gill stood firm. After Shivam Dube was dismissed for 13 runs, India's score was 48 for 5. Gill scored 39 runs off 37 balls, hitting three boundaries. Riyan Parag and Washington Sundar, batting at seven and eight, scored 26 and 25 runs, respectively. India ended up with a total of 137 runs for 9 wickets.
Chasing 138 runs, Sri Lanka made a good start. Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis put on a 58-run opening partnership. Nissanka scored 26 runs, and Mendis scored 43 runs, including three boundaries.
Kusal Perera, batting at one down, contributed with 46 runs off 34 balls but narrowly missed his half-century. However, after the first three batsmen, the rest of the lineup struggled. The middle order flopped, with no other batsman reaching double figures. Sri Lanka managed to tie the match on the last ball, taking it to a Super Over, where they eventually lost.
Washington Sundar was named Player of the Match, while Suryakumar Yadav was awarded Player of the Series.
