Concerns Surround Shakib Al Hasan’s Fitness Ahead of Second Test

Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has sparked renewed criticism over his fitness following a lackluster performance against India in the first Test. Fans are questioning whether he will be dropped for the second Test. On Monday, BCB selector Hannan Sarkar addressed various inquiries about Shakib during a media briefing.

Hannan stated, “Shakib is our best player, and we must acknowledge that. His presence in the lineup makes it easier to form a balanced combination. He played this match and I was impressed with his batting. Compared to his previous performances, he appeared more confident and handled the pressure well, even though he didn’t score big runs. Shakib has always been a crucial part of our team’s balance.”

Regarding Shakib’s injury, Hannan mentioned, “He felt comfortable while bowling, something he couldn’t do before. However, he did get hit on the same finger again, causing some pain. We have time before the second Test, so we will monitor the situation closely. Shakib is an honest player; if he feels unable to bowl, we will consider using him only as a batter.”

When asked about Shakib's fitness percentage, Hannan refrained from providing specifics: “I won’t judge his fitness percentage right now since we just finished the match yesterday. Today is a day off, and we will be heading to Kanpur tomorrow. After two practice sessions, we will make an assessment. He’s under the physiotherapist's close watch today and tomorrow, and we’ll gather feedback once we return to the field.”

Hannan also clarified that he does not object to using Shakib solely as a batter or bowler: “We consider Shakib as an all-rounder. If he performs well as a batter or bowler, we will utilize him accordingly. He is always a priority for us as an all-rounder.”

In conclusion, Hannan emphasized that Shakib’s participation in the second Test will depend on the team’s needs: “If we require Shakib, he will play. However, if we feel we can manage without him, that’s also a possibility. He also plays other formats, and we have three T20 matches coming up, which we will consider. With four days until the next Test, we will closely evaluate his batting and bowling abilities and take his opinions into account before making a final decision.”
