Zimbabwe Achieves Their Highest Test Score with Three Centuries
Zimbabwe recorded their highest-ever score in Test cricket by amassing 586 runs in the first innings against Afghanistan. Centuries came from captain Craig Ervine, Brian Bennett, and Sean Williams.
In the first Test in Bulawayo, Craig Ervine won the toss and opted to bat first. Zimbabwe faced an early setback as Joylord Gumbie was dismissed for 9 runs with the team total at 43. Ben Curran, brother of England’s Sam Curran, was out for 68, bowled by Allah Ghazanfar.
The third-wicket partnership of 78 runs ended with Kaitano’s dismissal. Zimbabwe then lost their fourth wicket when Dion Myers fell at the team total of 220. However, Sean Williams and Ervine formed a crucial 163-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Williams scored a magnificent century before being dismissed for 154 by Naveen-ul-Haq. His innings included 10 fours and 3 sixes.
Ervine also completed his century, scoring 104 runs before being caught off Zia-ur-Rehman’s bowling. Brian Bennett remained unbeaten on 110 runs from 124 balls. Zimbabwe, on the second day, posted a mammoth total of 586 runs after losing all their wickets.
Among the Afghan bowlers, Ghazanfar claimed 3 wickets, while Zahir Khan, Zia-ur-Rehman, and Naveen-ul-Haq picked up 2 wickets each.
