BCB’s Decision: Shanto to Lead in Afghanistan Series, Taijul Left Out of ODIs for Test Focus

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has announced the squad for the upcoming ODI series against Afghanistan, with Najmul Hossain Shanto retained as captain. Left-arm spinner Nasum Ahmed and Soumya Sarkar have returned to the ODI squad, while Taijul Islam and Anamul Haque Bijoy have been left out. The series, scheduled to take place in the UAE, also includes a new face: fast bowler Nahid Rana.

Wicketkeeper-batter Liton Kumar Das is absent from the squad due to illness. After missing the second Test against South Africa due to fever, he has yet to recover, which influenced his exclusion.

Despite rumors of Najmul Hossain Shanto stepping down as captain after the recent Test series against South Africa, he will continue to lead in the ODI format. When asked about this, Chief Selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu explained, "This is the board’s decision. As selectors, it’s best if we don't comment on this matter. He was the captain, and he’s been retained in that role."

Nasum Ahmed’s recall to the ODI squad after more than a year was also clarified by the chief selector, who stated, “Nasum was part of the last World Cup squad. Bangladesh hasn't played many ODIs since then. If Shakib were available, the left-arm spin position might have been different, but we see Tanvir and Nasum as our main left-arm spinners. We feel Raqibul needs more time to develop.”

On Taijul Islam’s absence, the chief selector added, “Since Shakib is not available for Tests, Taijul has become critical for us in that format. While he can perform well in ODIs, his role in Tests is even more vital. We need to keep him injury-free.”
