Zimbabwe has shown interest in hosting the Women's T20 World Cup, which is scheduled to take place in October. The tournament was initially set to be held in Bangladesh, but due to ongoing political instability and security concerns, the ICC is considering moving the event. In light of this situation, Zimbabwe has emerged as a potential alternative venue for the World Cup.
The ICC is closely monitoring the situation in Bangladesh, and as days pass, the likelihood of hosting the World Cup in Bangladesh seems to diminish. Alternatives being considered include India, Sri Lanka, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). However, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has rejected the option of hosting the tournament in India, and Sri Lanka's weather conditions are deemed unfavorable.
Given these circumstances, Zimbabwe has expressed its readiness to host the World Cup. According to the cricket website Cricinfo, Zimbabwe believes it is well-prepared to host the tournament and has the experience to manage such events. The country previously hosted the 2018 and 2023 World Cup qualifiers and co-hosted the 2003 World Cup with South Africa and Kenya. Zimbabwe is also set to co-host the 2026 Under-19 World Cup with Namibia and will be a co-host for the 2027 ODI World Cup alongside South Africa and Namibia.
Zimbabwe's bid is appealing not only due to its readiness but also because it could be a more cost-effective option compared to the UAE. The cost of hosting the World Cup in Zimbabwe is expected to be lower than in the UAE.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) will hold a meeting with the ICC regarding the Women's World Cup on Tuesday to finalize whether the tournament will take place in Bangladesh or be moved to another venue.
