At the Civil Service Cricket Club in Belfast, Zimbabwe and Ireland faced each other for the first time in Test cricket. Although the start of the first day of the Belfast Test was great for Zimbabwe, the hosts, Ireland, took control by the end.
Winning the toss, Ireland opted to field first, sending Zimbabwe in to bat. Debutant Joylord Gumbie and Prince Masvaure gave Zimbabwe a solid start. The partnership was broken at 97 runs when Gumbie was dismissed for 49 runs off 99 balls. Masvaure played a significant innings, scoring 74 runs.
However, apart from these two, only Sean Williams (35) managed to reach double figures. From a strong position of 121 for 1, Zimbabwe collapsed to 210 all out. In the final stretch, the visitors lost 5 wickets for just 17 runs.
For Ireland, Barry McCarthy and Andy McBrine took 3 wickets each, while Mark Adair claimed 2 wickets. Craig Young and Curtis Campher each took 1 wicket.
Due to rain, only 71.3 overs were played on the first day. If the weather remains favorable on the second day, Ireland will take to the crease.
