Virat Kohli retires from T20 internationals
Virat Kohli, India’s star cricketer, has announced his retirement from international T20s. His team, India, won the T20 World Cup 2024 title, where Kohli was named Player of the Match in the final. Kohli disclosed his retirement while accepting the award.
Virat Kohli’s form with the bat had been underwhelming throughout the recently concluded ICC T20 World Cup 2024. However, he delivered his best performance in the final. He scored 76 runs off 59 balls, including 6 fours and 2 sixes, and was dismissed as the Player of the Match in the final.
While accepting the Player of the Match award, Virat Kohli said, “This was my last T20 World Cup, and winning the World Cup was our goal. God is great, and I got the job done for the team on the day it mattered. It was now or never. This was my last T20 for India; I wanted to make the most of it. I wanted to lift the cup, respect the situation rather than force it. This was an open secret (about retiring). It's time for the next generation to take over; some amazing players will take the team forward and keep the flag flying high.”
Virat Kohli has played 125 international T20s for India, scoring 4188 runs at an average of 48.69, with 1 century and 38 fifties. His strike rate in international T20s is 137.04, with a highest score of 122*.
