Uncapped Pennington, Jamie Smith picked for West Indies Tests
Uncapped Dillon Pennington and Jamie Smith have been named in the England squad for the first two Tests against the West Indies. Ben Foakes and Jonny Bairstow have been left out, with Jamie Smith set to take up wicketkeeping duties. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has announced a 14-member squad for the Tests at Lord's and Trent Bridge.
New Faces in the Squad
The ECB has introduced two new faces for the West Indies Test series: wicketkeeper Jamie Smith and fast bowler Dillon Pennington. Surrey's Jamie Smith, who has previously played ODI matches for England, will be donning the Test wicketkeeping gloves, replacing Ben Foakes and Jonny Bairstow.
Jamie Smith will turn 24 on the third day of the first Test at Lord's, which will also be James Anderson's final match in Test cricket. If all goes as planned, Smith will make his Test debut for England on July 10 at Lord's.
Fast Bowling Options
England has also selected two uncapped fast bowlers, Gus Atkinson and Nottinghamshire's Dillon Pennington. Atkinson has experience in both white-ball formats at the international level and was part of the Test squad that toured India earlier this year.
The third and final Test of the series will be played at Edgbaston, the squad for which will be confirmed at a later stage.
Squad for first two matches:Ben Stokes (C), James Anderson (first test only), Gus Atkinson, Shoaib Bashir, Harry Brook, Zak Crawley, Joe Root, Ben Duckett, Dan Lawrence, Dillon Pennington, Ollie Pope, Matthew Potts, Jamie Smith (WK), Chris Woakes.
