UAE Women Set Unprecedented Record with 10 Retired Outs in One Innings
In a historic and unprecedented moment in international women’s T20 cricket, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) women’s team made headlines by retiring 10 batters out in a single innings — a tactic never before seen at this level of the game.
The unusual incident occurred during a match against Qatar in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Asia Qualifier, held in Bangkok on Saturday. After a blistering start, UAE’s innings was powered by captain Esha Oza, who smashed a century — 113 runs off just 55 balls — while fellow opener Theertha Satish added 74 off 42 deliveries. The duo propelled the team to 192 runs in just 16 overs.
With rain looming and the threat of a no-result match, the UAE team resorted to an inventive strategy. As there is no formal "declaration" rule in T20 cricket, the team chose to retire their batters out deliberately, allowing the match to proceed to Qatar’s innings quickly. Eight batters walked in and retired without facing a single ball, resulting in a total of 10 retirements in one innings, setting a unique world record.
In response, Qatar collapsed for just 29 runs, with seven players dismissed for zero. UAE secured a massive 163-run victory, one of the biggest margins in the tournament’s qualifying round.
This match also saw 15 batters dismissed without scoring, setting another record for the most ducks in a single women’s T20I match.
With this commanding performance, UAE remain unbeaten at the top of Group B. Their focus now shifts to the ‘Super Three’ stage, as they aim to clinch a spot in the next Women's T20 World Cup.
