UAE Emerges as Potential Host for 2024 ICC Women's T20 World Cup After BCCI Declines
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has declined to host the 2024 ICC Women's T20 World Cup, making the United Arab Emirates (UAE) a potential alternative venue. However, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is making every effort to prevent the tournament from being relocated.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) is considering Dubai/Abu Dhabi as an alternative, but the BCB has requested additional time to finalize their decision. The ICC is expected to reach a decision on the Women's World Cup issue soon, potentially by August 20.
While the ICC explores other options, the BCB remains hopeful. Previously, the BCB had written to the Chief of Army Staff to assure the security of the tournament. Both parties have been in regular communication to address the situation. However, following the outbreak of violence last month, several board officials, including long-time BCB President Nazmul Hasan Papon, have fled the country.
India was a suitable option but the BCCI refused to host the tournament primarily due to weather concerns. The ICC prefers a host country with a similar time zone to Bangladesh and stable weather conditions. The UAE fits these criteria well, with its world-class infrastructure provided by the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB). Additionally, the ECB is reported to be interested in hosting the event.
Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka have also expressed interest. With only 50 days remaining until the tournament's scheduled start, all eyes are on the ICC's decision.
The preparation matches are set to begin on September 27, with the tournament scheduled to run from October 3 to October 20. The event will feature 10 teams competing in a total of 23 matches.
