Tigers Fall Short in Super Over as West Indies Level the Series
In a nail-biting finish, West Indies edged out Bangladesh by just one run in the Super Over to win the second ODI in Mirpur, leveling the three-match series 1–1.
Chasing a modest 114-run target, the West Indies innings had its share of drama. Left-arm spinner Nasum Ahmed struck early, removing Brandon King for a golden duck. Alick Athanaze and Keacy Carty steadied the chase with a 51-run stand before Carty fell for 35.
Leg-spinner Rishad Hossain then turned the game around, triggering a collapse as the visitors slumped to 90 for 4. Skipper Shai Hope tried to anchor the innings, building small but crucial partnerships to keep his side in the hunt.
A 44-run eighth-wicket stand brought the West Indies close to victory. However, the game twisted again when Justin Greaves was run out for 26.
With six runs needed off the final over and two wickets in hand, Saif Hassan bowled brilliantly — two dot balls and a wicket raised Bangladesh’s hopes. But a dropped catch by Nurul Hasan Sohan on the final delivery allowed the Windies to level the scores at 113, forcing the game into a Super Over.
Bangladesh captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz handed the ball to Mustafizur Rahman for the Super Over. The left-arm pacer started well — conceding just a single off the first ball and dismissing Rovman Powell on the second, thanks to a sharp catch from Saif. But the West Indies managed to push their total to 11 runs, thanks to a boundary off the final delivery.
In reply, Bangladesh had a real chance as Akeal Hosein bowled two wides and a no-ball, but the Tigers couldn’t capitalize. Despite a fighting effort, they managed only 9 runs, falling short by just one.
Earlier, Bangladesh struggled with the bat after winning the toss. The home side was kept in check by disciplined spin bowling from the visitors. Saif Hassan fell early for 6, while Towhid Hridoy (12), Najmul Hossain Shanto (15), and Mahidul Islam Ankon (17) couldn’t convert starts.
Soumya Sarkar fought hard with 45 off 79 balls (3 fours, 1 six), but wickets kept tumbling. Skipper Miraz and Nasum Ahmed (14) added some resistance, followed by Nurul Hasan Sohan’s quick 23.
The late fireworks came from Rishad Hossain, who smashed 39 not out off just 14 balls, hitting three fours and three sixes to lift Bangladesh to 213 for 7. Miraz remained unbeaten on 32.
For West Indies, Gudakesh Motie took 3 wickets, while Akeal Hosein and Alick Athanaze picked up two each. The Caribbean spinners also made history by bowling all 50 overs of Bangladesh’s innings — the most ever bowled by spinners in a single ODI innings.
With the series now tied 1–1, both teams will battle for the decider in the final ODI.
