Australia’s popular T20 tournament, the Big Bash League (BBL), could soon be played on Indian soil. If everything goes according to plan, the opening match of the 2026–27 season may be hosted at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, the home ground of IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings.

Cricket Australia (CA) had identified Chennai as a potential venue as early as February this year. After months of discussions, they have reportedly received positive feedback from both the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) and the BCCI.

On Monday, a five-member delegation from Cricket Australia attended the IPL match between Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad at the MA Chidambaram Stadium as part of a venue inspection. It is understood that CA is also working closely with the Australian government on the matter. BCCI president Mithun Manhas was also present at the venue.

However, a few government-level discussions still remain before the match can be officially confirmed.

There are also several logistical challenges involved in hosting the game in India. Since there are no direct flights from Australia to Chennai, player travel and recovery time are important considerations. In addition, the risk of heavy rain and flooding in Chennai during December is also being taken into account.

The match could be scheduled as a daytime fixture to suit Australian broadcast timings. IPL day matches begin at 8pm AEST, which is more convenient for Australian audiences, while night matches start at midnight AEST.

Several BBL franchises have already shown interest in playing in Chennai. Sydney Thunder, Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades are among the teams being discussed. However, if one team plays as the designated “home” side, it would lose one home fixture in Australia, which could impact ticket sales and membership revenue.

Meanwhile, discussions about hosting a BBL match in India come amid ongoing debate in Australia over the league’s privatisation plans. There are differing opinions among state cricket associations regarding proposals to introduce private investment into several BBL franchises.
