Suryakumar Yadav Could Be India's T20 Captain
After the World Cup, Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma retired from T20 cricket. Following Rohit, Hardik Pandya's name frequently emerged as the potential leader for India in the T20 format. This speculation arose because Hardik had already led India in Rohit's absence last year. However, BCCI is somewhat hesitant to confirm Hardik Pandya as the next permanent captain.
The biggest obstacle for Hardik in becoming the captain is his injury-prone nature. Due to injuries, he is already not playing Test cricket. If the captain misses crucial series due to injury, it would not be beneficial for the team. This concern has caused differing opinions within BCCI regarding giving Hardik the captaincy.
A BCCI source told Indian Express, "It’s a delicate issue. No one is in full agreement, both sides have their points. Hardik’s fitness is a significant concern, although he led India to win the World Cup."
In the final over of the World Cup, Hardik Pandya bowled and helped India win the match. However, it seems unlikely that he will be seen as the next T20 captain of the country.
Suryakumar Yadav is being considered as an alternative captain. The BCCI source further mentioned, "We have also looked into Suryakumar. His leadership style is quite popular in the dressing room."
Who will ultimately be India's T20 captain, Hardik or Suryakumar? It is believed that head coach Gautam Gambhir might play a significant role in this decision. Gambhir has previously worked with Suryakumar at Kolkata Knight Riders. Additionally, Suryakumar showcased his leadership during the Australia series at home after the ODI World Cup. Hence, it is speculated that Suryakumar Yadav could be India's next T20 captain instead of Hardik.
